This is where stuff that won't fit on the Shellac Shanty or AudiOddities blogs. Lounge, funk, or just stuff that I happen to like run through my addled brain. Eclectica forever!

Si Zentner - Desafinado

Bossa Nova & Si Zentner, an explosive combination. On the back of the box, the liner notes say that "bossa nove" translates into "new wrinkle", which has a bad connotation when dealing with tapes (or the faces of pretty women, but that's another matter entirely!)...

This is a Liberty stereo tape that has SIZZLING audio, nice charts, and other really good stuff. Si knows how to swing it, definately. I think the tape is from around 1965 or 66, again I'm not sure...

Cover scans are here:
The front...
The back...

Without further ado, I present for you some definately UN-WRINKLED bossa nova in the form of Desafinado.

Now, a note on further postings...

I have had some requests for more tapes, including those that would fall outside of the scope of the otherwise loosely defined genre of this blog... should I start another share site that is exclusively reel tapes? I have a BUNCH of classical material, including some WFMT airchecks that are absolutely WONDERFUL as far as audio quality goes... those would be easy to put up as a bunch of them (there are 80 reels in all) are already encoded.

Now for the other shoe... if I do start up a new tape share site, I will be putting up a PayPal donation link, as I will need to subsidize server space as well as media acquisition cost... what say you, faithful fans... post comments & let me know.

Rest assured, I have a bunch of material on LP for moodietoonz, so there would stil be postings here either way, it is just that I am reluctant to put full classical stuff on a lounge/tiki/jazz site...

Hey there, virtual Professor.
I am just about 60, and went to see Sy (sounds like Mel Blanc...) at a place in the Bronx, it was an Amusement Park, actually, called (as I remember it) Freedom Land. Yes, it was pretty big and had a bandshell and did summer weekend concerts, and the one I went to (being about a Soph in High School at PCHS, Port Chester High School) was The Everly Bros. and Sy Zentner's Big Band. Oh yeah, I wasn't there for Sy, but actually, having grown up with Duke, Count and King (both of them, BB, Nat Cole and King Pleasure to name a few) was ready to enjoy the sounds of a live big band. IT WAS GREAT. Sy was a consumate showman, and many "older" couples (not the kids there for the Bros.) got up and cut the asphalt down front near the band. They were doing the numbers from this LP, since some of it was Bossa Nova, and of course, the folks tried to do that, but hey, nobody really KNEW how to Bossa Nova Dance, so it was fake it time. The band perfomed maybe 45 mintues, and did an encore, which make the teens get a little hootie and antsy, but it was a beautiful summer day, and the concert was FREE with admission, and besides, the EVERLY BROS. were next. A guy came onstage and had a big pompodore and the girls started to scream tentatively, and the guy plugged in his electric guitar, hey, he was only the guitar player!!!! The guys wouldn't fall for that, and waited with arms folded and looked cool. It was a great show, the Everlys did perfect harmony (which they continued to do for another what , 15 or 20 years...) and the girls got to scream on Wake Up Little Suzie... Nice day at the amusement park in the Bronx. circa 63 or 64, i'm thinking.
Hey, it had to be before '64, since it opened in '60 and closed in '64!
Yeah, Freedomland.

Keep up the great music history, my friend. I'll have to get some cash for your continued success.

Yes!!

If you could post a list of your WFMT concert air check tapes, I'd gladly pay a reasonable amount to download the ones in which I'm interested.

I have several of my own, but not suggesting a swap. I'll post any of them in Operashare if it's something you don't have.

I just turned 60...doesn't seem like that many years. I played trombone in a big-band we had in high school in Dayton, Ohio and the guys and myself went to see Si whenever he was in town or nearby. I remember well seeing his band at "Coney Island" park in Cincinnati in the pavilion. We also sneaked into "The Living Room" (underage) to hear Si, Kenton and Basie when they were there. "Desafinado" was my favorite Si album. I almost wore it out playing it. Then one of my friends "borrowed" all of my Zentner LP's for a weekend... and moved with his parents to Michigan and I never saw them again. Oy! I'd love to see all the old stuff re-released on digital media, but only some small selections are currently available. Thanks for posting this.

I'm back. God what a great thing to have access to the Si Zentner album once again!
The thing that was fantastic about the Zentner band was mostly the Bob Florence arrangements. He would take an old tune and not only make it swing, but make it fresh again like it was just written.

I've restored the cover JPG's to their pristine condition and updated the MP3 ID3tags and zipped it all up together. It will be available for 7 Days or 100 downloads.

Here is the link for the file:

It is about 64Mb so use a high-speed connection.

Did you ever get the "Waltz in Jazz Time" album converted? If so, would you post it!
